Boosting STEM skills in local schools

14 AUGUST 2020

Our Cannington operation partnered with the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy

Quality education is the foundation of economic and social prosperity and supports the development of emerging and future community leaders.

Our Cannington operation partnered with the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) to boost the number of students with the essential skills needed for a successful career in the resources industry.

QMEA delivered a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program to schools in Cannington’s local communities, Townsville and Brisbane, with a focus on female and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Classroom sessions are used to create interest from both teachers and students in STEM subjects.  The program also creates professional and trade pathways for students to embark on resources careers.

Our Cannington team played a hands-on role delivering the program, volunteering their time to mentor students and creating a vital link between the resources industry and the classroom.

In 2019, 151 students took part, with 92 per cent reporting they had learned something new and 100 per cent of participating teachers saying the program had raised their awareness of the resources sector or improved their teaching of STEM subjects.
