Our operations

Our Illawarra Metallurgical Coal operations are in the Illawarra and Macarthur regions of the southern coalfields of New South Wales, about 75 kilometres south of Sydney.

Steeped in coal mining history dating back more than 150 years, the region’s first coal mines opened in the early nineteenth century.

Soon after, collieries were developed to mine coal for the growing local steel industry and labourers settled into the area, bringing their families with them. Roads, schools and hospitals followed, and communities flourished.

It is a legacy etched into the way of life.

Our history of coal mining around these parts began in 1935 at Wongawilli Colliery.

Big things beneath the surface

Over the years we have modernised coal mining at Illawarra Metallurgical Coal making it safer and more efficient.

Our underground mines at Appin and Dendrobium produce premium-quality, hard coking coal for steelmaking. As a by-product, we also supply small amounts of energy coal.

Everything is processed at our West Cliff and Dendrobium coal preparation plants, before being transported by road and rail down to Port Kembla in Wollongong. From there it is transported within Australia and around the world.

We also manage the Port Kembla Coal Terminal on behalf of a consortium of partners.

What we produce

  • Peter Baker

    Vice President Operations

Having spent the majority of his career working in underground coal operations, including in the Illawarra during his early career, Peter brings to Illawarra Metallurgical Coal (IMC) extensive experience in managing longwall mines safely and productively.

His vast experience as a senior leader across a range of functions and operations, including in functional production, health, safety and environmental positions, means he is well suited to manage the complexities of IMC’s operations.

Peter joined South32 from Compass Minerals where he was most recently Vice President Operations of the world’s largest underground salt mine in Goderich, Canada. Previous to his time with Compass Minerals, Peter held senior roles at Peabody Energy, Xstrata Coal and NSW Mines Rescue Service, overseeing significant safety and culture transformations.
