In the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, South Africa where our Hotazel Manganese Mine is located, many people lack educational qualifications and technical skills, leading to high levels of unemployment and poverty in the community.
To help to break the cycle, we are committed to enabling and empowering young people by giving them opportunities to study maths and science, which can help them get the qualifications they need for good jobs.
We’ve been funding the Maths and Science Learner Incubator Programme in partnership with Star Schools in this area for more than five years, and in 2017 we awarded top performing students from twelve secondary schools with certificates for good performance in maths, physical science and english. The awarded learners were selected from students who attended the Maths and Science Learner Incubator Programme in Grades 10 to 12, and their certificates recognise their efforts and encourage them to improve their grades.
Our goal is to create self-sustaining solutions that help our host communities, and our Incubator Programme is a great example.
