Jason Lubcke has a little more responsibility than your average employee. When he gets to work in the morning, he knows his day is based on one purpose: to get everyone home safe and well each day.

At an alumina refinery, that’s no easy feat.

Jason is a Safety Specialist at South32’s Worsley Alumina Refinery in Collie. And South32 takes safety seriously. Jason’s job ensures employee and site safety from the ground up: from the frontline workers blasting and operating heavy machinery to senior management bringing in the big ideas.

Starting as a subcontractor with South32 over 25 years ago, Jason has developed a passion for site safety. He knows keeping South32 employee’s safe means ensuring a future for his community. With 1,500 locals working for South32, Jason’s job couldn’t hit closer to home.

Jason lives with his wife and two teenage children in Bunbury and is a dedicated community member. It’s clear to see South32’s impact on the Collie and larger Southwest community. Beyond simply having a presence at community events and sponsoring local sporting teams, South32 helps with practical, hands-on work - like repainting community buildings, helping with repairs and more.

Over 25 years, starting in an entry-level role, Jason has built a life for himself and his family to be proud of; and he credits South32 for the opportunity to grow his career, partake in his community and show up for his family.

When he’s not supporting his daughter with her year 12 studies or supporting his son’s burgeoning cricket career, Jason enjoys mountain biking across iconic Southwest locations - never taking for granted where he lives and works.

South32’s commitment to its people and community runs deeper than just ‘on the clock’. A few months back, Jason’s family was involved in a car accident. The people who helped them at the accident scene were South32 employees.

“You don’t get that sort of camaraderie anywhere else,” said Jason.
