How one nomination is helping children build brighter futures in South Africa

11 NOVEMBER 2025

In Richards Bay, South Africa, iKhaya LikaBaba has been giving vulnerable young people a safe place to call home for nearly two decades.

The not-for-profit provides urgent alternative care for babies and children in need of protection, stability, and a chance at a better future.

Through dedicated staff, volunteers and a full-time social worker, the team supports children from as young as a day old, helping to reunite them with families where possible, facilitate adoptions, and provide long-term care. The team’s goal is to help each child grow into a confident, independent young adult, equipped with the education and skills to build their own future.

Ornessa Cassim, Supervisor in the Health, Safety and Risk team at our Hillside Aluminium operation, nominated iKhaya LikaBaba for a grant as part of our ‘10 for 10’ community initiative after seeing the positive impact the home continues to have on children’s lives.

“I’ve seen how the care, love and stability at iKhaya LikaBaba give young people a real chance to thrive,” Ornessa said. “It’s a place that nurtures confidence and helps them see what’s possible for their future.”

The US$10,000 grant will help fund educational support programs, spanning from early childhood development to university and post-school skills training. The support comes at a meaningful time, 2025 marked a milestone when one of the first children accepted into the home began university, and another will complete high school in 2026.

“For the children of iKhaya LikaBaba, education is a stepping stone to hope and independence. We are deeply grateful to South32 for selecting us for this grant, which allows us to continue nurturing their potential and building brighter tomorrows,” said Loressa Kritzinger, Coordinator, iKhaya LikaBaba.

As we celebrate 10 years of South32, the ‘10 for 10’ community initiative recognises our people and the community organisations close to their hearts, another way we’re building brighter futures together.
