Creating safe spaces for girls in Mozambique to learn and thrive

21 NOVEMBER 2025

When Irina Micavo from our Mozal Aluminium operation first visited Ndixe Primary School in the Marracuene District of Maputo, one thing stood out.

The girls didn’t have a safe or private place to go to the bathroom. For many of them, it meant discomfort, missed classes and a daily worry most of us never have to think about.

Irina, who works as a Production Execution Superintendent at Mozal, knew this was something that could change. When nominations opened for our ‘10 for 10’ community initiative, she put forward the Association for the Promotion of Citizenship and Environmental Rights (APROCIDA) to help build new girls’ bathrooms at the school.

Her nomination was selected and APROCIDA will receive funding to construct new, safer facilities. It’s a practical step that will help girls feel more comfortable at school and stay focused on their learning.

“I nominated APROCIDA so we can help create a school environment where all students can learn with dignity.”

“For me, this is about more than infrastructure,” Irina said. “It’s about giving girls the same opportunity to learn and thrive in a healthy, respectful environment.”

Through the ‘10 for 10’ community initiative we’re recognising the community organisations that matter most to our people and supporting projects like these that build healthier, more inclusive communities.
