In rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, many schools still rely on outdated and unsafe pit latrines as their only sanitation facilities, which is a major concern for health, safety and dignity, particularly for young students.
Through our 10-year anniversary ‘10 for 10’ community initiative, which provides grants of up to US$10,000, funding has been provided to the Philani Cebekhulu Foundation to construct new, safe toilet systems at two schools in Ulundi.
Nominated by Fikiswa Nomazoza, Facilities Manager from our Johannesburg office, the Foundation’s work stood out for its focus on community health and education.
“When I first learned about the conditions many students face in rural schools, I wanted to support a project that would make a real difference,” Fikiswa said. “The Foundation’s work gives students a safe, dignified space and helps keep them healthy so they can focus on learning.”
Many students in under-resourced schools are exposed to unsafe and unsanitary toilet conditions. In many cases, especially for young girls, this has discouraged regular school attendance. With this funding, South32 is helping the Foundation change that.
The project includes the installation of new hygienic toilet facilities, rainwater harvesting systems, fencing for safety, and hygiene education workshops to promote long-term wellbeing.
“We are deeply grateful to South32 for their generous grant. This contribution is more than just a financial investment; it is a profound statement of commitment to restoring dignity, safety and hope for our children in rural communities. It is through partnerships like this that sustainable change becomes possible,” said Annette Dlamini Cebehulu, Philani Cebekhulu Foundation CEO.
The ‘10 for 10’ community initiative celebrates the positive impact our people are having in their communities. This project is one example of how our support can create lasting change, improving health, safety and wellbeing in communities where we operate.
