Homelessness isn’t always just about being without a roof over your head. It’s complex, and can often be linked to mental health, trauma, substance use and other issues.
Homelessness isn’t always just about being without a roof over your head. It’s complex, and can often be linked to mental health, trauma, substance use and other issues.
Covenant House Vancouver knows this, so it doesn’t just provide shelter to vulnerable youth, it offers mental health support, life skills development and other services to help young people find their feet – all in a safe and stable environment.
Monica Jimenez Correa is a Hermosa Process Engineer based in South32’s Vancouver office and feels strongly that every young person deserves a chance to thrive, regardless of the challenges they’ve faced early in life.
“I’m drawn to the work they do at Covenant House Vancouver because I’ve seen how hard it can be for young people who have experienced homelessness to access opportunities later in life,” Monica said.
Monica nominated Covenant House and was thrilled to hear her application was successful. As a result, the organisation will receive US$10,000 to support its youth programs.
“This initiative helps to break down some of the barriers homeless youth face, and creates pathways for healing, growth and long-term success,” she said.
With around 6,000 youth experiencing homelessness every night in Canada, and more than 50% of these reporting abuse at home as a contributing factor, the services provided by Covenant House are not just essential, they’re life changing.
Thanks to Covenant House and our South32 ‘10 for 10’ community initiative, homeless youth in Vancouver have an opportunity for a brighter future.
