South Africa Energy Coal

South32 owns 92 per cent of South Africa Energy Coal, with the remaining eight per cent held by Phembani Holdings, a South African based industrial holding company.

Energy coal operations, located near the towns of eMalahleni (Witbank) and Middelburg in the coalfields of the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, consist of primary coal mining operations (Khutala Colliery, Klipspruit Colliery and the Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex), as well as three processing plants.

The Khutala Colliery is an underground bord and pillar operation while Klipspruit Colliery is a single dragline, multi seam open-cut mine that is combined with a truck and shovel mini-pit. The Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex consists of open-cut mines using draglines as well as truck and shovel operations.

History

South32 South Africa Energy Coal, formerly known as Ingwe Collieries Limited, operated within the Gencor Limited/Trans-Natal Coal Corporation Limited group. In October 1994, Rand Mines Limited and Randcoal Limited on the one hand, and Gencor Limited and Trans-Natal Coal Corporation Limited merged their coal interests. Trans-Natal Coal Corporation Limited changed its name to Ingwe Coal Corporation Limited while its subsidiary, Trans-Natal Collieries Limited, changed its name to Ingwe Collieries Limited. The coal assets were transferred to Ingwe Collieries Limited in 1998.

Prior to that, in July 1997 Billiton acquired the non-precious metal interests of Glencor’s and, in 1998, Ingwe Coal Corporation Limited became a wholly owned subsidiary of Billiton. BHP and Billiton merged in 2001 and, as a result, Ingwe Coal Corporation Limited became wholly owned by BHP Billiton. In 2007, Ingwe Collieries Limited changed its name to BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa Limited, and in 2012, it changed from a public to a private company known as BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa Proprietary Limited (BECSA).

In May 2015, South Africa Energy Coal became a wholly owned subsidiary of South32.
