“Thank you, Cerro Matoso, for making our dreams come true” and “welcome to the community” were some of the signs on display as locals cheered on the first ore from our Cerro Matoso operation’s Queresas and Porvenir project in Planeta Rica, Colombia.

The people of Planeta Rica and neighbouring communities joined our teams last week to mark the milestone, which represented a gradual start-up to the Q&P project’s operations.

To date, the project has created around 400 jobs and provided training for more than 100 people in areas like equipment operation, civil works and environmental monitoring. Local roads have also had major upgrades as part of the works, improving conditions for 3,500 people on their daily commutes.

The development of the Q&P project is helping to grow nickel production at Cerro Matoso and is expected to contribute to higher average ore feed grades over the next six years.
