South32 Worsley Alumina has committed a total of A$120,000 to support recovery efforts across the Boddington and Wandering communities following significant bushfires impacting the region in December and January.
The funding package includes $70,000 to the Shire of Boddington for bushfire cleanup and recovery activities, as well as $50,000 to the Shire of Wandering to assist with infrastructure repair and community recovery.
The Boddington bushfire, sparked by lightning in December, burnt more than 4,000 hectares, forced evacuations and came within two kilometres of the townsite. Only weeks later in the nearby Shire of Wandering, a second fire affected the local community.
South32 Worsley Alumina Vice President Operations, Pine Pienaar, said, “The contribution reflects the operation’s commitment to supporting neighbouring communities during a challenging start to the year.
“Many of our people call this region home, and the impacts of these bushfires have been felt deeply across our workforce and the wider community.
“We appreciate the leadership shown by the Shires of Boddington and Wandering throughout their respective emergency responses and early recovery efforts.
“This funding will support both shires as they continue their recovery and help strengthen the response capabilities of local emergency services.”
South32 Worsley Alumina continues to work closely with local stakeholders as recovery and remediation activities progress.
