Welcoming our new graduates

Welcoming our new graduates in South Africa

Four new graduate engineers have recently joined us at our South Africa Manganese operation, while two more graduates will start soon – one at South Africa Manganese and another at our Mozal operation in Mozambique.

We now have 99 graduates working in Southern Africa, with the majority having received bursaries from South32 to support their university studies.

Amogelang, 27, attended the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein and completed his degree in mechanical engineering last year. He said it wasn’t always easy but was very grateful for the support the bursary provided.

“I’m where I am today because of the support I had from South32. My advice to other students looking to join the graduate program is that they should go for it,” she said.

Amogelang and his colleague Donald learned about South32’s bursary program while attending the Star Schools Saturday School Programme  for high school students in the Kuruman region in the Northern Cape.

We have funded the maths and science learner incubator programme in John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, where our Hotazel Manganese Mine is located, for many years.

It inspired Donald, 24, to pursue a career in mechanical engineering at Wits University in Johannesburg.

“South32 sponsored me throughout university and I gained a wealth of knowledge and practical experience through my vacation work,” Donald said.

“I’m looking forward to growing personally and professionally in this dynamic, inclusive and supportive culture.”

We are currently supporting more than 300 people through our Southern Africa bursary programs, helping with finances for three or four years of study. The bursaries cover tuition fees, accommodation, meals, books and laptops, with the majority of graduates going on to join South32 when they receive their qualifications.

We’ll be sharing more information about the bursaries and other opportunities on our website: https://www.south32.net/people-careers/work-with-us.
