Truck driving course increasing employment and diversity

Our Cerro Matoso operation in Colombia is providing mine truck operator training to women from its local communities.  

The aim of the initiative is to create economic benefits and employment opportunities in the region while at the same time increasing the diversity of Cerro Matoso’s operational teams. Around 37 women have completed the training so far, with many now working with Cerro Matoso as truck operators or to advance their training. 

After completing her course and starting work as a Cerro Matoso operator, Daris Argumedo from Planeta Rica’s Punta Verde indigenous community said: “Every day when I wake up, I tell myself I am going to be a great operator for my son. He is so happy to have a mother who drives a Scania mining truck.”  

Viviana Ruiz, who is also a leader of the Zenú Unión Matoso indigenous community, said the training had strengthened her self-confidence.  

“Now I know that I can go a long way if I set my mind to it. In my community, they never thought of having a person in a mine truck course, much less a woman. I have high expectations of showing my community what I can do,” Vivianna Said.
