Tech to help to bridge the gap for teachers and kids

25 NOVEMBER 2025

When Alex Oakley from Worsley Alumina first saw the call for applications to our ‘10 for 10’ community initiative he didn’t think much of it.

However, after a few conversations with his wife Nadine - a psychologist working across several schools in the South West of Western Australia – it sparked an idea that would bring lasting benefits to local students.Through her line of work, Nadine often talks about the challenges faced by children and teachers in their local community, from limited access to updated technology to the growing need for practical tools that support social and emotional learning. Those stories stayed with him.

“I thought it’d be great to see something happen locally. Some of the iPads at the school couldn’t run the programs they needed anymore, and I figured if there was a way to help, I should give it a go,” Alex said.

Alex went on to nominate the Australind Primary School Parents and Citizens Association and they received A$10,000 to fund new iPads for use in the school’s social skills program.

The devices will help ensure more equitable access to learning technology for students who need extra support. Any remaining funds will go towards upgrading the school’s bike track, encouraging outdoor activity and connection beyond the classroom.

Alex and Nadine live in the nearby suburb of Leschenault with their dog, Otto. Together they’re passionate about contributing to their local community. “We don’t have kids ourselves, but it’s nice to contribute to something that benefits other families in our community,” Alex said.

This initiative captures the very essence of ‘10 for 10’ - empowering our people to connect us with causes that matter so that we can make a difference in our communities.
