Supporting Groote Eylandt Tourism

Supporting Groote Eylandt tourism through a fishing sponsorship.

The home of our GEMCO operation, Groote Eylandt, is being showcased to Australia as it features in ‘The Last Cast’ television series featuring AFL star and Brownlow Medallist, Patrick Dangerfield.

Groote Eylandt lies in the Gulf of Carpentaria about 50 kilometres from the Northern Territory mainland. The series showcases the Archipelago’s lush natural coastline, abundant wildlife and the pristine waters teeming with pelagic and reef fish.

GEMCO Vice President Operations, Jo-Anne Scarini, said GEMCO’s support aimed to promote tourism in the region.

“Building an ongoing and sustainable tourism industry presents a great opportunity for the traditional owners of Groote Eylandt, the Anindilyakwan people,” Jo-Anne said.

“The Last Cast is a fantastic way to showcase this beautiful part of the world to the rest of Australia and we encourage viewers to come and visit.”

“We are proud to be supporting Groote Eylandt tourism by sponsoring the production.”

Patrick Dangerfield, who regularly visits the region, said taking part in the series and exploring one of Australia’s most pristine waterways was a 600 kilometre trip of a lifetime.

Patrick was accompanied by Groote Eylandt local and South32 employee, Bomber Farrell, who has been visiting the Eylandt since 2012.

“It is such a unique location with some of the best fishing I’ve experienced,” Bomber said.

“The series is one of the greatest platforms to promote Groote Eylandt to the rest of Australia. Those who are fortunate enough to have experienced the Eylandt know what a special place it is.”

The four-part series airs nationally on Channel 7 over four weeks from Sunday 23 April, 2018.
