Reducing emissions

07 DECEMBER 2017

We are using innovative ways to minimise our greenhouses gases at our Illawarra operations.

Methane is a greenhouse gas that is present in our coal mines, and one of our priorities is to minimise how much of it discharges in to the atmosphere. Our Illawarra team has installed a methane extraction system as part of our gas drainage process, and it collects high quality methane from the coal seam and surrounding rock strata, as well as from previously mined areas. We then deliver that gas to an electricity generation facility, where it’s used create power.

Our Illawarra team is also working on finding more ways to extract methane from our ventilation air, to further reduce our emissions.
