Protecting our people in the work they do

01 JULY 2019

We're committed to the health and safety of our employees

Around two thirds of Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70*.

At our GEMCO operation in Australia’s Northern Territory, employees regularly work outdoors so our personal protective equipment (PPE) policy, coupled with education and awareness campaigns, help us to manage this risk.

As part of our commitment to the health and safety of our employees we also run skin cancer screening and awareness campaigns at our operations and corporate offices with our Illawarra Metallurgical Coal and GEMCO operations both running programs in the past 12 months.

After screening over 300 employees and contractors at GEMCO, 34 per cent were referred to a General Practitioner for further skin checks.

Andrea Lupson, GEMCO health officer, said: “Occupational sun exposure is a significant risk factor to our workforce, so we encourage all personnel to use the many different options of PPE we have on site to ensure protection all year round.

“The PPE range includes recommended Cancer Council sunscreens, various hat brims with sun guard accessories for better coverage and mobile shade shelters for field work. The elements up here in the tropics are harsh, so we do the utmost to protect our people in the work they do.”
