Mozal helps shape brighter futures for thousands of students

18 JUNE 2025

Mozal Aluminium is supporting the rehabilitation and expansion of Djuba Primary School in Maputo, Mozambique, a meaningful step toward improving access to quality education in the local area.

Once complete, the project will support more than 3,100 students and help create local employment, with 27 new teaching positions, 15 administrative roles, and around 150 temporary jobs during construction.

At the groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month, the Governor of Maputo Province, Manuel Tule, spoke about the value of the project in easing pressure on nearby schools and extending access to basic education through to Grade 9.

Student Márcia also shared her experience of the current school conditions, explaining how classrooms would flood during the rainy season, making it difficult and sometimes impossible to learn.

With an investment of nearly 160 million meticais (approximately US$2.5 million), the school will be upgraded to include:

  • Six new classrooms and rehabilitation of 11 existing classrooms
  • A new administrative building
  • A library and computer lab
  • Modern sanitary facilities and sports fields
  • A water supply system and perimeter wall

“This is more than a construction project," said Samuel Gudo, Mozal Country President.

"It’s a meaningful step toward improving lives and giving children the opportunity to dream bigger and learn with dignity.”

The new school is expected to be completed and handed over in January 2026.
