HMM delivers reliable water access for the Magobing community

Residents of Magobing Village, in South Africa's Northern Cape province, are benefiting from more reliable access to clean water following the completion of a borehole upgrade supported by Hotazel Manganese Mines (HMM).

The project, handed over in August, provides a long-term water solution for the community and reflects South32's commitment to supporting health and wellbeing in the communities where we operate.

HMM invested more than R2 million (approximately US$125,000) to upgrade the borehole and surrounding infrastructure, helping improve reliability so the system can continue serving the community into the future.

The upgrade includes a solar-powered system, backup generator and additional security measures.

HMM Vice President Operations Barry Bezuidenhout said access to clean water is essential for community wellbeing.

"Access to clean water is fundamental to people's health, wellbeing and quality of life. Water is more than a resource. It creates opportunities, supports development and helps communities thrive."

The project was delivered in partnership with local government and community representatives.

The upgrade is already making a difference in daily life for residents.

Magobing Tribal Authority representative Gopolang Polelo said residents had previously experienced extended periods without water.

"There were times when the community could go for weeks without a reliable water supply. Since the upgrade, access to water has been much more consistent. We are grateful for the difference this project is making."

The Magobing Borehole Project shows how collaboration between communities, local government and industry can help address shared challenges and support long-term community development.
