Helping to prevent domestic and family violence

Domestic and family violence is a serious problem all over the world, including in many of the communities where we work. To help put an end to this violence and the unacceptable behaviour that can lead to it, this year we committed almost US$1 million to support a number of organisations and the incredible work they do.

In Western Australia, we’ve partnered with the Patricia Giles Centre for Non-Violence (PGCNV), which provides a range of services for families affected by or escaping family and domestic violence. As well as helping to raise awareness in the community, our funding will directly support women and children seeking refuge. PGCNV will also host team building days and educational sessions for our people in Perth.

In South Africa, where gender-based violence has been declared as the ‘second pandemic’ by President Ramaphosa, we contributed R2 million to the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Response Fund. The Fund supports the implementation of programs and campaigns to raise awareness and inspire change. Hillside Aluminium in Kwazulu-Natal has also provided R1.7 million in funding to Lifeline to help with counselling, campaign materials and educational opportunities for our people.

Our Illawarra Metallurgical Coal (IMC) operation recently donated A$10,000 to Supported Accommodation and Homeless Services Shoalhaven Illawarra to support women and children who are experiencing domestic and family violence and homelessness. The funding helped with the purchase of laptops and food vouchers and was part of A$45,000 in recent donations that IMC’s Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program made to local not for profits, including Wollongong Emergency Family Housing, St Vincent de Paul Society, Foodbank and Lifeline South Coast.

Our operations and projects have also supported local causes, and we are continuing our work around the globe to support this important issue.

Everyone has the right to feel safe, both at home and in the workplace. At South32, we have no tolerance for any form of violence, intimidation or harassment and are committed to providing a supportive workplace for all our people, and one where everyone feels safe asking for help.

Our Domestic Violence Support Procedure is designed to support our people who are either directly experiencing domestic violence, or supporting someone who is. It offers a range of support options, including paid leave, temporary accommodation and payment towards legal advice.
