Our Hillside Aluminium team recently reopened their Enterprise and Supplier Development Centre, a facility that supports local small and medium sized businesses through mentoring, training and networking opportunities. The centre was closed due to COVID-19 safety measures but is now delivering economic development initiatives in the Richards Bay business community.
Many micro, small and medium sized businesses in South Africa face challenges in remaining competitive, sustainable and ultimately growing their business.
One of the programs delivered through the centre is a two-year mentorship program, in collaboration with Collective Value Creation. The mentorship aims to build the capability of small businesses to become procurement-ready for larger organisations, increase sales and be competitive in the marketplace.
Participating small business owners learn essential skills and knowledge in areas that are important when becoming part of the procurement value chain of larger organisations, including health and safety; Covid-19 protocols, anti-corruption, corporate governance, human resources, labour law, financial record keeping, anti-modern slavery and self-development.
In the 2021 financial year, South32 invested US$22.2 million in community initiatives and activities globally, with 20 per cent supporting economic participation initiatives.
