Cleaner air for improved quality of life

21 FEBRUARY 2018

To help air quality, we’ve installed smokeless stoves and air vents in homes.

Creating a cleaner new cooking tradition in Colombia

In the Alto San Jorge region where our Cerro Matoso nickel mine is located in Colombia, many of the local people still use the traditional wood fired cooking methods. But not all traditions are good – wood fired cooking can pose risks to people’s health, including respiratory illness caused by particles in the smoke.

So to create a much cleaner new cooking tradition, we installed smokeless stoves and air vents in 66 homes in our local community, in partnership with the Social Alliance for the Alto San Jorge community.

The result is cleaner air in the home, reducing the risk of illness and improved quality of life, especially for the local kids.
