Building respectful behaviours in our communities

09 DECEMBER 2022

Our team at Hotazel Manganese Mines (HMM) has partnered with KM Therapy Solutions to mentor young boys in the Kuruman region of South Africa.

In support of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign, the mentoring event for young boys, developed by the HMM Men’s Forum, aims to equip boys with life skills to deal with peer pressure and bullying and challenge gender stereotypes which perpetuate violence towards women and girls.

Some of the HMM team, alongside the KM Therapy Solutions team and school educators, spent the day with 75 school boys, doing various activities to build social connection and wellbeing and educate them on gender-based violence.

Wessels Specialist Ventilation, and Chair of the HMM Men’s Forum, Thamsanqa Latha said how important it is to support and educate young boys about respectful behaviours and create healthy social connections with one another.

“We’re proud of this initiative which helps boys make good life choices and become men that stand against gender-based violence. Through mentoring we can help boys develop their life skills and plan for a bright future,” said Thamsanqa.

The team at HMM also recently held peer-to-peer counsellor training for employees to equip them with skills and guidance to support their team-mates who reach out in need of assistance.
