History and Location

Taking its name from the sheep and cattle station where it was found, our Cannington deposit in North West Queensland, is the world’s largest producer of silver and lead.

The deposit was first discovered as an anomaly in an aerial survey of the region, nearly 30 years ago.

A lot has happened since then.

Production at the mine has been underway for 20 years and it now produces seven per cent of the world’s lead and six per cent of the world’s silver.

From mine to market

At Cannington, we can seamlessly and reliably get our product from mine to market, having built a processing plant, a road-to-rail transfer facility as well as a ship loader at the Port of Townsville.

The underground mine produces about 3.3 million tonnes each year and our Cannington team is made up of about 550 full-time employees and up to 300 contractors.

Playing our part

We’ve seen an incredible amount of change in Cannington and we’ve done our best to bring about some change as well. We support the communities we are part of, including the three local government areas our Cannington operations take place in.

These are the McKinlay Shire where our mine site is located, the Cloncurry Shire which hosts our road to rail transfer and our ship loading facility in the City of Townsville.  We back these communities by investing in infrastructure and buying and employing locally, when we can.
