Coal is a fossil fuel made from prehistoric vegetation and organic matter compressed for millions of years.

There are two main types of coal, energy coal and metallurgical coal.

Energy coal is used for power generation and cement manufacturing and accounts for around 40 per cent of global electricity production.

It is the world’s second largest source of primary energy, largely because of its abundance and affordability for developing countries.

We mine energy coal at our South Africa Energy Coal operation and we are a major supplier to the country’s energy utility Eskom. Eskom generates 95 per cent of South Africa’s electricity.
